The objective of this research area is to design, develop, implement and evaluate methods and techniques to create intelligent systems capable of acquiring and integrating, on their own, knowledge on their domain, in order to progressively improve their performance to achieve their goals. The boundaries for the application of such computational methodologies have expanded rapidly over the past few years, and this expansion is supported by techniques and concepts derived from statistics, applied mathematics, computer science and engineering. This area includes the synthesis of computational tools that meet the real needs of various application areas such as bioinformatics, biometrics, economics, education, linguistics, health, textile and fashion, social network analysis, games, robotics, among others.
