Pattern Recognition

Pattern Recognition Research includes developing methods to analyze characteristics that represent an object in order to categorize it as belonging to a class in a set of known classes or a group. Pattern recognition methods employ theories derived mainly from Statistics (statistical pattern recognition), Computational Intelligence (paradigm based on connectionist learning, evolutionary computing and uncertainty) and Formal Languages (syntactic and structured pattern recognition). In applied research, the methods for pattern recognition can be used to solve problems in different areas, some of which are highlighted in the Graduate Program in Information Systems: bioinformatics, biometric system, medical diagnosis based on image and biological signals, linguistics and natural language processing, game development and social network analysis.
